Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see a shadow.
There is a lot to be said for the value of positive thinking. Some people like to visualize themselves accomplishing their goals, and others prefer to repeat positive affirmations several times a day. Both are effective in bolstering our confidence and reminding ourselves to stay focused. In today’s world we are told that a positive attitude can bring us personal fulfillment and business success. In truth, the two are inseparable, because a positive world view will always carry over into other aspects of our lives. Likewise, a negative attitude will also affect our lives. This is why it’s so critical to cultivate a positive outlook. The following are just a few notions that I’ve acquired along the way to building a successful business, and a happy life.
Positive thinking builds resilience
Very few entrepreneurs make it big with their first idea or business venture. Oftentimes, a series of failures and mistakes precede the final prosperous business. The good news is that research proves that positivity can help you become more resilient. Psychologist Barbara Fredrickson states “…positive emotions help speed recovery from negative emotions,” even if the positive thinking is self-generated. This means that our thoughts alone create our ability to overcome failure, and our desire to continue forging ahead. Your attitude is one of the few variables you can control in your personal and professional life. Every day, you are the one who gets to decide how you view the world. A positive outlook will energize your body and mind, yet a negative outlook will drain them.
Positive thinking improves problem solving abilities
It is believed that those who think positive thoughts have a greater capacity to assimilate new information. This then improves a person’s perspective and ability to problem solve. In a business, having keen problem solving abilities is crucial. Positive thinking essentially enables one to them to tackle problems and obstacles that may arise with both clarity and ease.
Positive thinking improves decision making abilities
Most people can relate to the fact that being in a negative frame of mind affects your decision making abilities. Research has proven that people are less likely to make decisions that have a positive impact if they are in a negative state of mind. A great book called Understanding the Entrepreneurial Mind speaks to this research, and states that “negative thinking from entrepreneurs in a negative mood could lead to decisions which are more likely to be poor for their venture”. This quote speaks volumes and I’ve reflected on it many times in my own business ventures.
Perhaps most important is the fact that the lens through which you view your work, and your employees, will largely determine your company’s success. Therefore, a positive outlook alone isn’t enough to help you create a successful business, but when combined with a solid set of business principles and a solid collection of leadership skills, it can be the tipping point that helps your company move from average to stellar.
I suggest that for thirty days, you approach your business with the ideas expressed here. Go mark it on your calendar. Then, challenge yourself to be more responsible for your contributions to the workplace. Replace negative thinking with positive thinking.
In the beginning, it might be difficult. But eventually, it will create great changes in both you, and your business.
